Over the past 3-5 years boudoir photography has really become extremely popular! It’s used for fiancé gifts, Valentine’s, holidays, anniversary, just because! I’ve done about 5-10 this year for women who said they are “doing it for them”. They are hands down my favorites to work!
Make sure when booking your session you are comfortable with your photographer! If you are not completely comfortable, it doesn’t matter how good your photographer is, it will show! Make sure your book with someone your trust, and someone your significant other won’t mind seeing you half naked in front of. I include hair and makeup option for clients! It’s very important part of your overall image. We want you to look and feel your best on your special shoot day.
-You want to have a creative planning session with your photographer. Even if you aren’t sure and want the professional to take lead, make sure you hear some of the ideas. You want to be prepared and know what to expect.
-Don’t put the shoot off because you want to lose weight or tone up! Even the most disciplined person will be waiting too long! If your session is being used as a gift for a significant other, don’t put it off! You are gorgeous and your significant other isn’t going to notice the extra 10 pounds your concerned about. I promise!
-Make sure you invest in lingerie that fits you properly. This is keep to making your best assists stand out. Don’t wait until last minute to shop. You could even up settling for something you don’t love. Don’t wait to cut off the tags when your arrive at the studio. Stick with something classic like black, sheer or lace! Use props to bring out personality!
-Get a professional manicure and pedicure. Make sure they are complimentary to each other. A lot of sexiness throughout a boudoir shoot is within the details.
-Moisturizer,Moisturizer,moisturizer! You should be doing this daily anyway, but escalate the week leading up to your shoot and the day of! Avoid moisturizer with sunscreen protection in it the day of the shoot.
-I always suggest using a professional hair and makeup artist for your shoot. The professional are trained to work with lighting and shadow. If your are using a professional be sure to speak up if you aren’t comfortable with something. Professional artists will not be bothered by you requesting a minor change. If you are choosing to style yourself, be sure to be completely ready when arriving. Don’t be afraid to switch up your hair or lip color of time allows, this will give variety!
-Bring a few outfit options and always extra stockings. You never know when a run will appear and you want to be prepared. Don’t stress about the outfits but have options. Different backdrops work better with variety.
-Bring sexy high heels or thigh high boots. (They can always be returned). If your doing a shoot as an anniversary gift, your wedding shoes may be a nice choice as well. Even if you don’t wear heels, bring them. They have more benefits when shooting boudoir.
-Shave your legs, underarms and anywhere else the night before. If you are waxing these areas, be sure to do so at least 48 hours before.
-Tan! Color looks great on everyone. Spray tans don’t just add color, they camouflage cellulite and blemishes. You don’t need to go crazy but a little color will do wonders. Depending on the time of year be sure to avoid tan lines. I suggest having a nice spray tan about 1-2 days before your shoot. Do not try it for the first time for your shoot! Make sure you have a professionally trained spray technician preform your service!
-Bring your significant others belongings, shirt, tie, helmet, guitar, jacket, ect. This is the time to be creative. Even if you are not sure how to use bring it, your photographer will have ideas! Have fun with this, bring unique clothing, hats, furry items. Any material with textures like fishnets, fur, animal print, latex ect usually photograph very well!
– Don’t drink alcohol the night before your shoot. Alcohol is dehydrating and will shot in your pours! But have some wine while shooting to loosen up! Don’t go overboard!
-Don’t wear tight clothing to your shoot. You don’t want marks and indentation on your skin.
-Don’t worry about a breakout that appears the night before. LEAVE IT ALONE. It can be fixed!
– Don’t stress and have fun!
– Drink lots of water! Avoid things that will make you feel bloated.
– Fishnets with large diamond holes are slimming on larger legs
-If you hate your arms, bring a sexy robe or off the shoulder sweater!
– Bring a music soundtrack that gets your pumped up and sets a confident comfortable environment.
-Practice your poses-even if your feel ridiculous doing so. A great go to pose is putting one leg in front of the other, it shows a great feminine curve.
Back to the weight thing… I think it’s the most common thing I hear when talking with someone about a session! If there’s just no way your shooting until you slim down. The few extra pounds are all that’s weighing on your mind… Here are a few helpful things to consider:
-Shoes can lengthen legs. This is especially true with nude shoes and nude stocking or black shoes with black stockings. Make sure you stick with a thinner heel and sole for a more overall slimmer look. Avoid chunky and anything with an angle strap.
-Necklaces trim neck size and chest! Long necklaces elongate your look, especially when paired with a v-neck top or bra. Avoid chokers and short necklaces
-Makeup will help tremendously with shadowing areas. It’s not just used for your face!
-If you plan on using any sort of belts, buckle up and make sure you stay away from anything petite and small! Go for the larger buckles, to define your waist!
Learning how to apply in sheer layers is best. Invest in a skin care routine. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune, but you absolutely have to commit to the routine.
You can have the best of the best in makeup brands but the truth is if your skin in prepped and prepared properly then it doesn’t matter how high end your cosmetics are.
First you must have a clean face to apply makeup. Applying makeup to skin that hasn’t been properly cleaned is equivalent to apply paint to a dirty, uneven wall.
Second is exfoliating. Im sure you hear this constantly. But it’s very true and extremely important. You should try to exfoliate at least 2 times a week but 1 will do. Exfoliating is more than just smoothing your skin. It helps remove dull and flaky patches. It deals with the imperfections. If you commit to exfoliate on a regular basis, you will notice a soft luminous finish to skin. Once you remove the dead dull skin, your foundation will apply much nicer. It will also help your moisturizer penetrate and work much better.
This brings me to the third thing! Moisturizer! Use a moisturizer that is suited to serve your skin type. Always allow the moisturizer to penetrate before applying any makeup. If you have oily skin, you want to use a mattifying or oil absorbing moisturizer. Dry skins need a much richer formula. Be careful though, richer doesn’t mean more! Too much or too thick can result in nothing else adhering to your skin properly and sliding off, like foundation.
Always use sunblocks. This is probably the most obvious. Daily use is a must. SPF does tend to have flash back when taking photos, this isn’t the best option when doing a photo shoot or wedding day. However, using a lower SPF will not make a difference.
Primers are also a must. It prepares your skin and face for the makeup.
Finally, ALWAYS remove your makeup at the end of the night. You want to make sure you remove your makeup thoroughly, no matter how exhausted you may be. You can even leave makeup wipes on your night stand to ensure the easiest option. However, the best situation would be to wash your face and apply a night cream.
Remember to always check the ingredients of all products, especially if you have sensitive skin. Sometimes, investing time into an amazing skin care regimen will help you with sensitivity.
I have a list of recommended products I will save for another blog post! What are some of your go to products? 💋💕
While getting ready on wedding day there is a lot of things going on at once. The following are some key questions that I have been asked numerous times. Being prepared will eliminate any day of chaos.
Q: How long will each person take?
A: Each person takes approximately 20-30 minutes for hair and 30-40 minutes for makeup.
Q: Can I do a pre-wedding trial before I commit to a contract?
A: You can absolutely have your trial before booking your wedding day. I want you to feel confident in your beauty decision. However, I always like to remind brides that your wedding date is not secure until you have submitted a signed contract. Dates are a first come basis and will not be held longer than 10 days pending contract!
Q: When should I book my trial?
A: Ideally your trial should be booked 6-8 weeks prior to your wedding date. You want your trial to be after you have decided on other key details (dress, veil, accessories) Brides who do trials too early often typically change their mind as other details come together. While you are able to do another trial if you wish, it does cost money every time!
Q: When should I book my day of wedding services for hair and makeup?
A: As soon as possible! Please refer to post When Should I Book my Services. Everything is first come first serve and I do book clients over a year in advance.
Q: What do I need to do to book?
A: Sign a contract and submit your deposit of 25% SuttonArtistry@gmail.com or 610-202-9902
Q: Do I need to know everyone that is requiring services at the time of booking?
A: It is best to know exactly who will need services. While I know sometimes bridesmaids and family are difficult to get final answers form so far in advance, it’s best to have as close of an estimate as possible. We sometimes rate able to accommodate add on people however, it doesn’t always work out!
Q: Have you worked will all ethnicities?
A: Yes! I have trained and worked with many different hair and skin types/tones!
Q: I only need hair or makeup (not both). Am I am to still book?
A: Absolutely! I work with multiple artists and companies. I am happy to provide you with whatever services are convenient for you!
Q: Should I have pictures?
A: Yes, Pictures are the best way to see what your style and esthetic is.
Q: What kind of products do you use?
A: I use high quality professional grade products. This ensures long lasting style and glamorous finish. My kit has a strong range of brands.
Q: Do I need to bring Bobby pins?
A: It’s amazing to me how many people actually ask this question! NO way is my answer. A professional should never expect you to supply your own Bobby pins.
Q: What do I need to bring?
A: You only need to bring whatever accessories you wish to have! If you want or require hair extensions for a style, then you must supply them as well!
Q: When you arrive at my location, what do you need from me?
A: An outlet, Small table space, and a stool! A well lit area is best or natural lighting!
Q: Should my hair be clean or dirty?
A: You have should be slightly dirty! A day old is best! I’d you are someone who needs to wash, freshly washed hair shouldn’t be flat ironed. The only exception to this rule is for ethnic non-relaxed hair.
Q: How long will my spray tan last?
A: Typically Sunless Tans last about 7 days. It is important to follow the proper pre tan exfoliating and post tan moisture.
Q: I’ve had a very bad tanning experience. Will my tan be orange or streaky?
A: To receive the best results from your tan, it’s best to come freshly showered, shaved and exfoliated! DO NOT apply lotions or perfumes prior to getting sprayed. Remove all jewelry and makeup! Use deodorant sparingly! You tan will not be streaking or orange, we offer custom color matching for your skin tone. DO NOT use a loofa or exfoliator after your spray tan, this will cause your skin to look uneven.
Q: When I showered my tan washed off! Is that normal?
A: Yes! The cosmetic coloring that you see when you initially get sprayed is a color guard. This is the color that gets darker throughout the day as your tan oxidizes. The cosmetic color will wash completely off when you shower and leave your tan looking fresh and natural! DO NOT use a loofa or exfoliator when showering after your tan!
After doing weddings for so long, I’ve learned that hair and makeup services are an after thought! It amazes me. You should absolutey book a professional as soon as you can! You dont need to know a year or more in advance exactly what you want to look like, or all the details of the day however your should secure your spot!
Make sure you have a contract with them (just like every other vendor you book). This helps ease your mind and protects your wedding date! Professionals use contracts to avoid any confusion and delays. It protects your wedding date from being over booked and it protects the professional from holding you date and being stood up!
When you look back on your wedding years later, all you have are pictures of what you look like! Why not make sure your hair and makeup is one of the priorities when scheduling everything. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been contacted to do a wedding a week prior! Thats just crazy to me. You are setting yourself up for possible diaster.
Hairstylist have such a wide range of skills, make sure the one you are booking for your wedding day look is expirenced in doing weddings! I know that seems crazy, however it does make a difference. Same goes for makeup, just because someone is amazing at doing their own makeup, or doing yours for a night out doesnt make them qualified as a wedding specialist! Wedding makeup is handled differently. The artist is taking in the consideration that you will be photographed all day long, among other things!
This is also something to keep in mind when you are doing your trial for these services. If you are someone who doesnt typically wear makeup, you still should have your makeup professionally done! Trust your artist! While you may feel like shes doing a lot, as a professional she will make sure you look “naturally beautiful” while being photographed! Keep that in mind when she asks you about wearing false lashes! Again, years later all you have are those precious photos to look at!
Once you have a venue and date set, book your hair and makeup! Trust me, I am already booking weddings for 2017! It one more thing to check off your list and not think about! It doesn’t mean you need to have a trial 18 months in advance, save that for 4/6 weeks prior! Remember as long as your booking a professional, the trial is for YOU the bride not to see if the professional is capabile! If you are concerned about their ability, you shouldn’t be booking them in the first place! 😉
Unless you don’t pay mind to anything beauty, you know this year really capitalized on the art of contouring and highlighting! Every major brand released a contour kit complete with different “must have shades”.
Did you get on the trend? What are some of your favorite kits that have been released?
The Kardashians and Instagram Famous Makeup Artists really brought this ever so popular trend to a face. The art itself is older than the pop culture trendsetters. Highlighting and contouring is the process of strategically applying makeup to the areas of the face that light would naturally hit and shadows eould naturally fall.
Usually the contour kits come complete with 3 deeper shades (contour) and 3 lighter shades (highlight). The 3 contour shades range from lighter to deeper and cool to warm. The highlights typically include a frosty color, a yellow toners powder and something with some pinker tones. This is done for diversity of skin tones and needs.
I try the pallets as they are released. I almost never keep them for personal use. I typically only reach for 2-3 colors out of each pallet which leaves 2-3 color untouched. For me this isn’t worth the money (for personal use). I always transfer the products to my freelance kit! They are much happier living there because all colors are used. I work with all different skin types, tones and ethnicities. While the same color may not be used on everyone, there is absolutey a color available.
Contouring is meant to bring out your cheekbones. This is achieved by carving out the hollow part of face with a shade darker than your skin tone. You also can customize the contour to your own needs. If you have a larger forehead and wait it to appear smaller, contour around the hairline!
Contour Hint: stick with matte shades: always avoid shimmery products!
Highlight is meant to bring attention to a specific area! This will also help the cheek bones pop! If you want your nose to appear a little thinner, highlight down the center to attract the eye and contour the sides! Highlighting really has come a long way this year, with trends like “Strobing” and “baking” ect.
Whether you are a pro or just trying out some of this Instagram ready trends, remember it’s all about the blur! Harsh lines are never chic! Always start soft and blend blend blend blend blend. It’s better to build up product.
Levels of hair damage!
There are 4 levels of damage the hair can go through:
Cuticular: the lightest form of damage. This is caused by everyday wear and tear on the hair. Flat irons, blow dryers ect.
Moisture loss: the next type of damage. This is expirenced after lightening the hair, or extreme heat stress. When your hair lacks moisture you start to encounter static. This can be prevented by using the proper products during washing. Also, if this something your expirencing try washing your hair less often until your moisture issue is resolved.
Protein: this is the third type of damage your hair could be expirencing. Protein loss would be defined by taking longer to blow dry or finding areas of breakage. This is the last salvageable damage. Once your hair is at this point, you need to totally revamp your hair care routine until you having improvement.
Elasticity loss: this is the final point of damage. The hair can only be truly repaired by cutting it. You will notice a gummy feeling when wet, as well as, stretching with out returning to normal form immediately.
Ten by Alterna is hands down the most amazing moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. It’s perfect for any hair that is stressed, dry or damaged. I also would recommend using it leading up to any major color change you may have planned. The proteins and keratins used in the formula help penetrate into the hairs cuticle and mend from the inside out. You want to start correcting any kind of stress on the hair immediately. This product will work phenomenally with the first 3 levels of damage. You want to keep an intense hair regimen until to start to see relief from the stress. The best thing to do is get regular hair cuts and leave your hair as natural as possible until you start to see improvement.
Ecru New York
ECRU New York creates some of my absolute favorite hair care products. They are paraben free, sulfate free and color safe. ECRU New York combines high quality skincare and cosmetic grade ingredients with the performance of professional haircare.
Silk proteins are used in every product within the collection because they strengthen and improve the integrity of the hair.
Silk proteins are the highest grade protein ingredients. Originally, this ingredient was only used in high-grade skincare, however when applied to hair, silk proteins form a transparent protective film that seals the hair cuticle increasing elasticity, natural shine and further preventing damage to the hair.
The packaging is über cute, so boutique.
ECRU Marine Thickening Balm! This is amazeballs! It’s a hair thickener, best used on fine hair. This is a gel form balm. It has minimal hold and doesn’t weigh the hair down. This is going to give you weightless lift without that fluffy feeling. If you have fine hair you know exactly what that means! Ecru Marine Thickening Balm can be cocktailed with multiple different products. It uses collagen to aid in the plumping of the hair whilst still keeping the cuticle smooth and intact.
ECRU silk nectar serum is hands down the best shine, smoothing serum I have ever used. This cocktails well, to break down any product that may be a little too strong or firm for the style your creating. I use it to smooth my ends, or settle any fly away hairs I have after blow drying. If you suffer from dry hair this is a holy grail savior. Silk Nectar Serum will be perfect in the drying winter months where you suffering from static or the damaging summer months where your fighting that humid sun! This serum works well at the beach to keep your hair feeling smooth and soft in the sand and salt water. It will also act a protection against the elements.
ECRU silk texturizing balm is the absolute best product on the market! Holy Grail! This is the silkiest smoothest texture balm EVER! It can be used to edge up a short style or give a long style seperation. I use it on every hair type for every style I create! The long “beach waves” everyone longs for… Here’s your secret! It allows the perfect amount of seperation while adding shine and hold. You want to create an edgy “piecey” look.., again here’s what’s your in need of! This is perfect to smooth your hair while creating evening styles or that everyday look.
ECRU New York has the idea for the best haircare. It makes total sense to include any skin care products that can be useful to create healthy, youthful hair. You need to start thinking about your hair care as a prescriptive regime as you would for skin. Your hairstylist should be just as important as the dermatologist. Make sure you are comfortable with the person your trusting your hair. Make sure they knowledgable on all elements of hair care. Every style looks better with healthy hair! 💋
